Legendary operatic star Marian Anderson was honored today when the U.S. Postal Service issued a new commemorative postage stamp recognizing her life and accomplishments. Symbolically, the first-day-of-issue ceremony took place at the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Constitution Hall, Washington, DC, the venue where she was once prohibited from performing because of her skin color.

The stamp art shows an oil painting of Anderson by Albert Slark of Ajax, Ontario, Canada, based on a black-and-white photograph believed to have been made by Moise Benkow in Stockholm, circa 1934. Richard Sheaff of Scottsdale, Ariz. is art director and designer of the stamp.

The fortunate collector who found an example of the withdrawn German Audrey Hepburn stamp has been told that it could fetch up to 50,000 euros at auction. Experts are advising he sells soon though before another example surfaces as collectors across Germany start to search frantically.

Werner Duerrschmidt, the 57 year old Bavarian postal worker who came across the stamp in September admits he was somewhat taken aback when he made the discovery: "I'd never heard of this issue," he said. "I asked other collectors and they hadn't either."

He contacted the German Philately Society who confirmed the stamp’s identity. It is now on display in the Philately and Postal History Museum in Bonn, although Duerrschmidt does plan to sell it eventually.

Norway commemorate artist: renowned fairytale illustrator saluted Norway commemorate artist: renowned fairytale illustrator saluted

The strikingly beautiful Lunar New Year Stamps souvenir sheet was dedicated today by the U.S. Postal Service at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu, HI. The event celebrated, commemorated and brought to a triumphant finale the award-winning and popular Lunar New Year stamp series designed by world-renowned artist Clarence Lee.

The double-sided souvenir sheet contains two of each of the Lunar New Year stamps issued over the last 12 years. Each is valued at the current 37-cent First-Class letter rate.

To commemorate the Chinese Zodiac, Lee created an intricate paper-cut design honoring each animal mentioned in an ancient Chinese fable. The fable says the emperor asked all animals to report to him on the day of the Chinese New Year, and the first 12 to reach the palace would be rewarded with a year named after them. As a result, 12 animals with their own distinctive characteristics and fate represent each year in the Chinese Zodiac.
